Anecdote: A short poignant real-life story, usually used to illustrate a single point.

As-told-to Story: A true story about someone other than the author but written in first person.

Book Proposal: A package submitted to a book editor that includes information about a book an author has written
or will write. It usually includes a cover letter, overview, marketing analysis, chapter synopsis, and sample chapters.

Byline: The name of the author placed below the title of his or her article when it is published.

Chapbook: A small booklet, usually paperback, of poetry, ballads or tales.

Cliche: An overused word, phrase or expression that no longer provokes thought or mental image.

Contributor's Copies: Copies of the magazine sent to an author because his or her work appears in it.

Contract: A legal letter of agreement between the author and publisher, determining rights sold, payment, free copies etc.

Cover Letter: A short letter addressed to the editor that accompanies a submitted manuscript.

Kill Fee: A portion of the agreed-on price for a completed article, which was assigned but never accepted or printed.

Pays on Acceptance: The publisher pays an author shortly after a manuscript is accepted.
