5. English Language Helps
-
Understanding is not the highest standard of English grammar.
-
The language changes through misuse. "Voluntarism" was not correct, but now "volunteerism" is in the dictionary.
-
Look to writing tone (formal or informal) for best word choice. [criminal or crook]
Correct grammar can make dialogue seem stilted. ["It is I." or "It's me."]
-
Language skills ain't what they used to be. They slacken over time, and texting is shortening the time.
-
There will always be purists trying to re-correct the slackening language skills.
-
You can't make sense of right or wrong without a stylebook.
-
Go with the boss on style - Associated Press [AP], Chicago, academic [MLA ...]
-
Don't look for consistency in the language or you'll go nuts. [supersede, exceed, precede]
-
On emotional matters, rule with your heart, not your head. You don't want to turn off your reader even if you're right.
[retarded/mentally disabled/challenged] [African American/ Black]
-
Know your grammar; break the rules only when you know you are doing it and why.
